Esports patches let a team put its logo on jerseys, jackets, hoodies and caps without reprinting the garment, and they double as fan merch. Most esports logos have sharp angles, outlines and glowing gradients, so the construction matters: woven patches hold fine edges and small text, embroidered patches give a raised premium look on bold marks, and sublimated patches reproduce gradients and full-colour art. Hook-and-loop backing is popular because players can swap patches between seasons and sponsors.
This guide covers school, collegiate, club and creator teams: how to adapt a gaming logo for a patch, where patches go on a jersey or jacket, and how to plan an order around a season or a tournament.
Adapting an esports logo for a patch
Esports logos are usually designed for screens: thin neon outlines, glow effects, drop shadows and tiny wordmarks under a mascot. On a monitor at full size that looks sharp. Shrunk to 3 in (76 mm) and rendered in thread, some of those effects disappear. Before you quote, look at your logo with three questions in mind:
- Is there a gradient or glow that carries the design? If so, either redraw it in solid bands or choose a sublimated patch.
- Are there lines thinner than about 1 mm at your target size? Thicken them or choose woven.
- Is the team name under the mascot smaller than about 1/4 in (6 mm) tall? Enlarge it, drop it, or use a separate name tab.
- Does the mascot work on its own without the wordmark? Many teams order a mascot-only patch for sleeves and caps.
A simplified version of the logo for small uses is standard practice for most sports brands, and gaming teams benefit from it too. Our guide on designing a logo for embroidery shows what to change and what to keep.
Which patch type suits gaming art
Three of the six constructions cover nearly every esports design. The right one depends on the logo more than the team.
| Construction | Strength | Good esports use |
|---|---|---|
| Woven | Fine edges, small text, flat and thin | Detailed mascots, jersey chest crests, sponsor tabs |
| Embroidered | Raised texture, premium feel | Bold mascots on jackets, hoodies and caps |
| Sublimated | Gradients, glow effects, full colour | Logos with neon glow, character art, fan merch |
| Chenille | Fuzzy varsity texture | Letterman-style jackets for school programs |
Woven is the safe starting point for most angular esports marks because it keeps points and inside corners crisp. Sublimated patches make sense when the glow is the brand. If you cannot decide, ask for both on the same quote at the same size and quantity. Our comparison of sublimated vs embroidered goes deeper on that choice.

Placement and sizes on jerseys and jackets
Esports jerseys are usually lightweight sublimated polyester, so heavy patches can pucker the fabric. Thin woven or sublimated patches sit flatter. On jackets and hoodies, embroidered patches carry the weight easily.
- Left chest crest: about 3 to 3.5 in (76 to 89 mm) wide.
- Shoulder or sleeve: about 2.5 to 3.5 in (64 to 89 mm), often a mascot-only mark or a flag.
- Sponsor tab: a rectangle around 3 by 1 in (76 by 25 mm) on the chest or sleeve.
- Back of a jacket or hoodie: 8 to 11 in (203 to 279 mm) for a full logo.
- Cap front: about 2 to 2.5 in (51 to 64 mm) tall.
These are rules of thumb; measure your garment before ordering. Our patch size guide covers each placement, and it is worth checking how the patch reads on camera at a LAN event as well as up close.
Backings for jerseys, merch and gear
How a patch attaches depends on whether it is permanent, swappable or sold to fans.
- Hook-and-loop: lets players change patches as rosters, seasons or sponsors change. The jacket or bag needs the loop side sewn on.
- Sew-on: the most secure choice for jerseys that are washed often.
- Iron-on: easy for fans at home. Use caution on synthetic jerseys, since some polyester will not take the heat; our guide to ironing patches on polyester explains why.
School and collegiate esports programs
High school and college esports programs often sit inside the athletics or activities department, which means the team may already have school colours, a mascot and rules on how the school logo can be used. Check with the athletic director or the marketing office before designing a patch with the school mark. Many schools are happy to approve a version of the mascot holding a controller or wearing a headset, as long as the core logo is not distorted.
School programs also borrow from traditional athletics: a varsity letter in chenille with a small esports emblem on the bar, a captain patch, or a patch for a state or conference championship. These sit naturally on letterman jackets alongside other sports, and they give players the same recognition as their peers. Our guide to chenille letterman patches explains the letter, bar and emblem pieces.
For clubs that compete in several titles, a common approach is one team crest plus a small game tab for each roster, so the program looks unified while each squad has its own identity.
Patches as fan merch
For teams and streamers with an audience, patches are a low-risk merch item: they ship flat, fit any size of fan, and go on whatever the buyer already owns. Common merch ideas include a mascot patch, a seasonal patch for a tournament run, a limited patch for subscribers or backers, and a set of small morale-style patches with in-jokes from the community. Lapel pins are a natural companion item at a booth.
When patches are sold rather than worn by the team, iron-on backings make them easier for buyers, and clear care instructions on the product page save you support questions later. If a patch uses a game publisher's characters or marks, check the publisher's rules on fan and team merchandise before you order.
Planning an order around a season
Esports schedules move fast, but the production timeline does not. Typical figures, confirmed on your quote:
- Quote back in 2 to 3 business days.
- Proof usually 1 to 3 business days after artwork.
- Production about 3 to 4 weeks after proof approval in writing.
- Rush around 10 business days when the factory can hold it.
Custom minimums start from 100 pieces and vary by product. A small roster can still reach that by adding fan merch, staff and alumni patches to the same order. Reorders skip setup and keep the digitizing on file, so restocking a popular patch is quick.
