Sports team patches do several different jobs: a crest on a warm-up jacket, a chenille letter for a varsity award, a number on a jersey, a patch on the front of a coach's cap, a tournament patch to sell or hand out. The right construction, size and backing depend on which job the patch is doing. This guide walks through each one and how to order for a full season.
We sell direct to teams, leagues, clubs, booster groups and individuals, so the same advice works for a high school program, a travel team or an adult league.
Common kinds of sports team patches
- Team crest or logo. Worn on jackets, warm-ups, polos and bags.
- Varsity letters, numerals and award patches. Earned and worn on letterman jackets.
- Names and numbers. Large, clean shapes on uniforms.
- Cap patches. For players, coaches and supporters.
- Tournament and championship patches. For an event, a title season or a milestone year.
- Bag and gear patches. On equipment bags, backpacks and duffels.
Choosing a construction for sports team patches
Embroidered for crests and logos
Embroidered patches are satin stitch worked over a twill or felt backing for raised, textured letters and logos. They suit most team crests, take bold team colours well and are finished with a merrowed or heat cut edge.
Chenille for letters and numerals
Chenille is tufted yarn built up into a raised pile, the classic letterman look. It suits bold, simple shapes: a block letter, a year numeral or a simple mascot. Fine text goes in as embroidery alongside the chenille.
Satin tackle twill for names and numbers
Satin tackle twill is made from pieces of solid twill fabric appliqued on with a stitched border, often paired with embroidery for lettering. It is a common choice for large numbers and team names on athletic uniforms, because big shapes stay light and flexible.
Woven and sublimated for detail and full colour
A woven patch holds small text and thin lines, which suits a tournament patch with dates, a venue and a sponsor line. A sublimated patch is printed in full colour dye, so gradients and photo style artwork come through in a way thread cannot manage.
| Use | Usual construction | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Team crest on jackets and polos | Embroidered | Merrowed or heat cut edge |
| Varsity letter or numeral | Chenille | Bold, simple shapes only |
| Names and numbers on uniforms | Satin tackle twill | Often paired with embroidery |
| Tournament patch with small text | Woven | Sharper detail than stitching |
| Full colour or gradient artwork | Sublimated | Ask about it on your quote |
Sports team patch sizes and placement
These are common starting sizes, not limits. Any size can be quoted, and the proof shows the exact size before anything is made.
- Left chest: 3 to 3.5 in, for polos, warm-ups and coaches' shirts.
- Shoulder or upper sleeve: 3 to 4.5 in.
- Chenille chest letter: commonly somewhere between 5 and 8 in tall.
- Jacket back: 8 to 12 in, for a large crest or team name.
- Cap front: 2 to 2.5 in tall, with 1.5 to 2 in for a small mark on the side or back.
- Beanie cuff: 2 to 2.5 in.
- Backpack front: 3 to 4 in, and 3 to 5 in on a tote or duffel.
Our patch size guide covers each placement in more detail. Size also limits text: embroidered lettering generally needs a cap height of about 1/4 in to stay legible.
Backings for jerseys, jackets, caps and bags
- Sew-on is the dependable choice for uniforms and jackets that are washed often, and the normal choice for chenille on wool letterman jackets.
- Iron-on is quick on cotton and canvas. It is less reliable on nylon and performance fabrics, and on garments washed hot, so sew around the edge as well if you use it there.
- Hook-and-loop suits equipment bags and gear where a patch should come off and go back on, such as a season or tournament patch that changes each year.
Caps are usually sewn, since the curved front panel and the stitching hold a patch better than adhesive alone.
Team colours and design tips
Send your team colours as Pantone references if you have them, or a jersey to match. Thread comes in a fixed range, so each colour is matched to the closest available shade, and the proof shows the result. Close shades, such as two blues in one logo, can read as one colour in thread, so consider merging them.
- Simplify the mascot. Large areas of solid colour stitch cleanly. Fine teeth, feathers and outlines blur first.
- Keep text short. A team name and a year read well. A full sponsor list does not.
- Give each element room. Put the name in its own banner rather than squeezing it into the artwork.
- Start from the best file. Vector artwork (AI, EPS or PDF) gives the cleanest result. A PNG or a photo of an old patch is enough to start.
Ordering for a season or a tournament
Count patches per person, then add coaches, staff and spares for new players and replacements. Custom runs start from 100 pieces, confirmed on your quote, and quantity is counted per design. A crest that every player wears is one design. A patch that changes for each player is many, so if you need individual names, say so on the request so the quote reflects it.
Work back from the date the patches must be in hand, such as the first game, a tournament departure or an awards banquet. Allow 2 to 3 business days for the quote, usually 1 to 3 business days for the proof, and about 3 to 4 weeks of production after approval. Starting five to six weeks ahead leaves a comfortable margin. A rush of around 10 business days is sometimes possible when the factory can hold it, but it is never guaranteed.
Next season is simpler. The digitizing stays on file, so a reorder of the same patch skips the setup and matches the last run.
Medals, pins and more for teams and leagues
Teams and leagues often order other pieces from the same artwork.
- Medals on printed neck ribbons for finishers, tournament places and end of season awards, including smaller medals for youth divisions.
- Lapel pins in soft or hard enamel, a common item to trade at youth tournaments.
- StudStone heat transfers for names, numbers and sparkle on dance and cheer wear.
- Embroidered luggage tags for team bags.
- Lanyards for coach, staff and tournament credentials.

Getting a quote for your team
To see a design before you send it, upload your crest to the free Patch Studio, choose embroidered, woven, chenille or tackle twill, set the size and preview it flat, on a black jacket or on a cap. It is a rendering, not a guarantee.
Then send your artwork, sizes, colours, backing, quantities and in-hands date through the quote form. We price the job with the factories that make that construction and send one quote within 2 to 3 business days. Nothing is made until you approve the proof in writing.
