Custom golf bag tags are embroidered tags that hang from a golf bag to show the club, the tournament or the team, often with a clear window on the back for the player's name and contact details. Clubs use them as season or membership tags, tournaments give them to every player, and school and college teams use them to identify team bags. Our tags are embroidered on heavy duty twill, come in a standard 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 in (114 by 64 mm) shape, a round shape or a custom outline such as a golf ball, and attach with a strong PVC cord. There are no setup or digitizing fees, and runs start from 100 pieces, confirmed on your quote.
Below we cover the main uses, the design choices that read well from across the bag room, and how to plan the order around a tournament date or the start of a season.
Who orders golf bag tags
Private and semi-private clubs
Many clubs issue a bag tag to members each year. The tag identifies member bags in the bag room and at the starter, and a new colour each season shows at a glance whose membership is current. Members often keep every year's tag on the bag, so a well-made tag becomes part of the club's look.
Tournaments and outings
Member-guest events, charity outings, corporate golf days and invitationals often put a bag tag in every player's gift bag. Unlike a sleeve of balls, a tag stays on the bag and keeps the event and its sponsors in view for seasons afterward.
School and college golf teams
Teams use matching tags for team bags and travel, often with the school crest and the player's name card in the window. They pair naturally with team caps and polos.
Golf leagues and societies
Weekly leagues, golf societies and travel groups use a tag as a membership mark. For a group of this size, one design that does not carry a year can be used across several seasons.
Shapes and sizes
The standard rectangular tag measures 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 in (114 by 64 mm), the shape most clubs and travel groups order first. The round tag uses the same twill and window, cut round, and reads well hanging from a strap or a handle. A custom outline follows your artwork, which is where golf tags get their character: a golf ball, a flag on a green, a shield or the shape of the club's crest.

| Shape | Best for | Design note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard rectangle | Clubs, teams, travel groups | Most room for a crest plus a name or year |
| Round | Season tags, tournament gifts | Center emblem with lettering around the ring |
| Golf ball outline | Clubs and outings | Dimple pattern can be suggested in tone on tone thread |
| Crest or custom outline | Clubs with a strong emblem | Keep points and inside corners simple |
Designing a tag that reads from across the bag room
A bag tag is read at arm's length or from a few feet away while bags are lined up in a rack. That favors bold shapes and short text.
- Lead with the club crest or the tournament logo, large and centered.
- Keep text to the club name, the event name or the year. Long sponsor lists belong on the tee signs.
- Use strong contrast between thread and twill, such as white on navy or gold on green.
- For a season tag, plan the colour rotation for several years at once so each year is clearly different.
- Put individual names on the card in the window, not in the embroidery, so one design covers every member.
Fine lettering follows the same limits as any embroidery. As a general guide, keep letters at least about 1/4 in (6 mm) tall. Our guide to embroidered luggage tags covers design limits and specs in more detail.
The ID window and the cord
Every tag has a clear vinyl ID window on the back with an identification card included, so the tag doubles as a bag ID if a bag goes missing on a trip or in a crowded bag drop. Clubs often print the member number on the card, and tournaments sometimes fill in each player's name before the event. The tag attaches with a strong PVC cord that loops through a bag handle or strap. If your job needs a different attachment, tell us on the quote request.
Planning around a tournament or a season start
Tournament dates do not move, and gift bags are usually packed a week or more before the event. Work backward:
- Request a quote with the shape, size, quantity, thread colours, artwork and in-hands date. Quotes return in 2 to 3 business days.
- Review the proof, usually 1 to 3 business days after we have the artwork. Check the event name, year and sponsor marks carefully.
- Approve the proof in writing. Production takes about 3 to 4 weeks after approval, then UPS shipping from Holly Hill, Florida.
- Leave a week before the event to fill in name cards and pack gift bags.
Running a yearly season tag
A season tag works best as a small system rather than a new design each year. Keep the crest, the shape and the size the same, and change one thing: the twill colour, the thread colour or the year. Plan the colour order for five or six seasons at once, avoiding two similar shades back to back, so the bag room staff can tell this year's tag from last year's at a glance. Because the design stays almost the same, each new season is close to a reorder, and the club's look stays consistent on every bag.
Decide what happens to leftover tags too. Clubs that put the year on the tag usually order close to membership numbers plus a small margin for new members joining mid-season. Clubs that leave the year off can order a larger run and use the colour to mark the season instead.
For a season tag, order in the off-season so tags are ready on opening day. Around 10 business days of rush is sometimes possible when the factory can hold it. All timings are typical and confirmed on your quote.
Matching items for the club or event
A bag tag rarely travels alone. Clubs often carry the same crest onto a hand embroidered bullion blazer crest for officers and committee members, and tournaments put the same logo on caps. Our guide to hat patches covers sizes and attachment for event caps. Using one approved artwork across items keeps the colours consistent.

When you are ready, see the shapes on our custom luggage tags page and send your crest and event date for a quote.
