Custom dog tags: stamped and printed

Military-style dog tags make a simple, lasting keepsake for a unit, a team or a memorial. Here is how stamped and printed tags differ and what to decide before you quote.

Custom dog tags are military-style metal tags made with your own text or design, usually for a unit reunion, a sports team, a memorial, a fundraiser or a brand giveaway. They are made two main ways: stamped, where letters are pressed into or out of the metal for the classic embossed look, and printed, where a full colour design is applied to the face. Stamped tags suit names, dates and short mottos. Printed tags suit logos, flags and anything with colour.

Custom dog tags are a quote-only item for us, so every order is priced to its specification. This guide explains the choices so your request has everything it needs.

What a dog tag is, and what custom ones are for

The dog tag began as an identification tag worn by service members, stamped with the details needed to identify the wearer. The familiar shape, a rounded rectangle with a hole at one end, comes from that history. Many veterans keep their tags for life, and the shape has become a symbol of service in its own right.

Custom tags borrow that shape for other purposes. Common uses include:

  • Unit and ship reunions, with the unit name, dates and a motto.
  • Memorial tags honoring a fallen service member, firefighter or officer.
  • Team tags for sports clubs, with the season and team name.
  • Fundraisers and awareness campaigns, often with a printed logo on one face.
  • Brand and event giveaways where a sturdy metal keepsake fits the theme.

If you are making memorial or commemorative tags, keep them clearly commemorative. A custom tag should not be designed to pass as an official identification tag.

Stamped dog tags

Stamping presses characters into the metal. On an embossed tag the letters stand up from the face, which is the traditional look that most people picture. On a debossed tag the letters sink in, which reads cleanly and wears evenly. Either way, the text is part of the metal, so it does not rub off.

Stamped text is best kept short and simple. Traditional tags hold a handful of lines with a limited number of characters on each, set in a plain block typeface. That suits names, ranks, dates, unit names and short phrases. Logos and fine artwork are better handled by printing or by a separate engraved or struck design, which we can quote alongside.

Stamping works well for personalized runs where every tag carries a different name. Send the names as a clean spreadsheet, one row per tag, and check spelling before you submit, since it will be reproduced exactly.

Printed dog tags

A printed tag carries a full colour design on its face. That opens up logos, flags, team crests, photographs and gradients that stamping cannot show. Printed tags often have a protective clear coat over the image. They are popular for sports teams, fundraising and brand merchandise, where the colour and the logo are the point.

Printed and stamped can be combined: a printed logo on the front with a stamped or printed message on the back. If you want both faces used, say so on your request.

Size, metal, chain and silencers

The classic tag is about 2 in (51 mm) long and a little over 1 in (28 mm) wide, with a hole at one end for the chain. Keeping close to that size is what makes a custom tag read as a dog tag. Stainless steel is the traditional metal because it resists rust and keeps stamped text crisp. Other metals and finishes, such as a black or coloured coating, can be quoted.

Tags usually hang on a ball chain. A long neck chain is standard, and a short second chain is sometimes added for a second tag. Rubber silencers are rings that fit around the edge of the tag to stop it clinking; they come in a range of colours and are an easy way to add team or unit colour. If the tags are a keepsake rather than something to wear, a keyring is another option.

Planning the design and text

Write the text for every line before anything else, then count characters. A dog tag is small, and stamped text in particular has a limit on how much fits on each line. Put the most important line first, keep abbreviations consistent across the run, and avoid tiny print on printed tags, since fine text is hard to read at this size.

For printed tags, use a simple version of your logo with strong contrast. A bold crest or a flag reads well. A detailed seal may lose its small text. If your organization already has a patch or coin design, the bold version of that artwork usually adapts well, and our challenge coin design guide has useful advice on fitting a design onto a small metal surface.

Dog tags are often ordered with other keepsakes for the same group. A reunion might pair tags with a challenge coin, and a unit might pair them with unit and morale patches.

Think about packaging and distribution as well. Tags for a reunion are often handed out at registration, so packing each tag in its own bag with its chain saves time at the table. For personalized tags, ask for them sorted in the same order as your spreadsheet, so each one is easy to match to its owner. Memorial tags given to a family or a unit may suit a small gift box or a card that explains the dedication. If you plan to sell tags at a fundraiser, decide early on a display: tags on chains hang well from a simple rack or a board with hooks.

How to request a quote

Dog tags sit with our other custom products and are quoted to order. Tell us:

  • Stamped, printed or both, and which faces carry artwork.
  • The text for each line, or a spreadsheet of names for personalized tags.
  • Size, metal and finish, if you have a preference.
  • Chain type, second chain and silencer colours.
  • Quantity and the date you need them in hand.

Send the details with your artwork. AI, EPS or PDF is cleanest; a PNG or a photo of an existing tag is enough to start. We usually reply with a quote within 2 to 3 business days, and nothing is made until you approve the proof in writing.
